What you can do BEFORE a violent incident:
- Know how to identify your partner's levels of violence so you can assess danger to yourself and your children.
- When possible, plan to leave before violence occurs, when your partner is not around and go to a safe place. Make arrangements with a trusted friend whom your partner doesn't know to help you and your children. Ask them not to tell anyone.
- Notify a neighbor to be alert to strange noises and to call police when it happens.
- If it is safe, get rid of all weapons in your home if your partner is nearing the violent stage or is in the violent stage of the cycle.
- Teach your oldest or most responsible child to call 911, giving your name and address if a violent incident is occurring.
- Know your local battered women's shelter number. Tehama County 1-800-324-6473.
- Plan where you will go in an emergency or dangerous situation. Consider telling your employer not to talk with your partner until he/she talks with you first, if you believe your partner may come to your work place.
Escape Items
- MONEY: Always keep some hidden. If not in your own home, in a place where you can have easy access to it day or night. Plan to have enough money for weekend motel rent, telephone calls (change), gas and food.
- KEYS: Have 2 extra sets made for your car and home, one to put in a safe place and the other to a trusted friend.
- EXTRA CLOTHING: Have a bag with at least 2 changes for you and your children. Consider the season and choose clothing that will benefit you.
- Important documents: Have a copy or be able to quickly gain access to:
- Social Security cards
- Copy of monthly bills
- Driver's licenses
- Mutual ownership paper (house, car, etc)
- Birth Certificates
- Valuable jewelry
- Pay Stubs
- Address book
- Bank account numbers
- You and your child's medications
- Insurance Policies
- Marriage license
